What will happen at your graduation?

Wondering what your graduation day will look like? Well, after arriving, you’ll be greeted at the cathedral and directed in the right direction by event coordinators. It’s recommended that you arrive at least an hour before your graduation slot to allow you enough time to collect your gown and get seated. The ceremony will begin, and speeches will be made by various faculty/academic staff before graduates are called forward to collect their certificates in alphabetical order. This is the perfect photo opportunity, so make sure you remind your guests to capture the moment (not that they’ll need reminding!).

Preparing for graduation

With just over a month to go, there’s a lot of preparation to do before the special day. That’s why we thought we’d offer a few useful tips to help you graduate in style!

1. Make sure you’ve received your invite

Graduating students should have received their invite via email directly from their university by Wednesday the 2nd of April 2025. If you’ve received your invitation and wish to attend graduation in July, you must register before the 13th of June.

If you’re expecting to receive an invitation and haven’t yet, we recommend contacting the university.

2. Order your cap and gown

When you think about graduation, you probably picture happy student graduates wearing gowns and tossing their caps (mortar boards) into the air, right? Well, academic dress is actually a requirement for attending. The LJMU gowns and caps are dark blue, while PhDs’ awards are scarlet. Hoods are lined in grey or blue silk, embossed with the University coat of arms – how smart is that!?

You can order the cap and gown directly from LJMU’s official suppliers, Ede & Ravenscroft, when you register your attendance.

Please note – Gown hire and photography bookings close at midnight on Friday the 13th of June.

4. Invite friends and relatives

After registering, student graduates will automatically be allocated one ticket for themselves and up to three guest tickets for friends and family. You’ll collect your tickets on the day of your graduation ceremony.

You needn’t worry about anyone missing out on watching you collect your degree certificate. The ceremony will be live-streamed and recorded for those who can’t make it.

5. Pick an outfit

Graduation is definitely worth dressing up for! After all, you’ll be walking across a stage in front of your fellow graduates and their guests to be greeted by the Vice-Chancellor and Faculty Pro-Vice-Chancellor. There’ll be plenty of photo opportunities too, so it’s only right that you look and feel your best.

You could opt for a nice dress and a pair of heels (that are comfortable to walk in). Or maybe a suit or a smart pair of trousers and a shirt. Remember to wear whatever you feel comfortable in, as you’ll likely be in these clothes for the full day!

6. Plan your celebration

Whether it be a celebratory meal with family at your favourite restaurant or a party with the friends you made at your student accommodation in Liverpool, there are loads of ways you can celebrate your graduation. But remember to plan ahead or make bookings to avoid disappointment, as the chances are, graduates from the other major universities in Liverpool will be planning their celebrations around the same time.

7. And one last thing. ENJOY IT!

Graduation is an exciting day for all students, marking the end of years of dedication and celebrating your greatest achievements as you embark on your next chapter! So, let yourself loose, savour your special day in July and make it one to remember.
