Wigan is a proper town centre rather than a commuter dormitory, and that shows in the day to day. The shopping arcades cover most of what you need without a trip into the city, with Boots, River Island and JD among the usual names. There are enough restaurants, bistros and pubs to keep a weekend interesting.

Mesnes Park is five minutes from the centre, which is where most people end up on a decent Saturday; it is Victorian, well kept and big enough for a proper walk. For getting out, the town has two railway stations and a new bus station, and both Liverpool and Manchester airports are under an hour away.

Employment locally is strong, and for everyone else the trains do the work. Manchester is roughly twenty minutes from Wallgate, Liverpool a similar run. You get the rent of a town and the reach of a city.
