Shopping for groceries, household products or a birthday card for your housemate?
With the rate of inflation increasing, affording the necessities is proving very difficult for students across the country – not just here in Liverpool.
Supermarkets are constantly vying for our attention, and as a result, have started offering the same prices as products in budget-friendly stores, like Aldi. Whilst you could shop around for the best deals at Tesco and Asda, using price comparison websites, it’s also important not to forget about the businesses on your doorstep.
In this blog, CARO Lettings are going to be looking closely at why it pays to use local businesses – especially while you’re staying at student accommodation.
Why shopping local is important
First and foremost, shopping locally supports those in your local community, which in this case is Liverpool.
Unlike when you buy from a chain store – where the main aim is to make a profit and distribute wealth elsewhere – buying from independent retailers in your area pumps money into the local economy. Which helps the community to thrive.
But that’s not the only reason why it’s important to shop local.
By supporting your local community, rather than high-street stores, you can help to create more jobs, so they can carry on selling their products and services. And that includes temporary and part-time jobs for eager students, looking to make a little extra cash whilst at uni.
How shopping locally can benefit you as a student
If you’re staying at our student accommodation in Liverpool, there are lots of reasons why you should support the businesses in your area.
Here are just a few of them:
- They’re often in walking distance – most students opt to leave their car at home when they go to uni – but even more so since the price of fuel has gone up dramatically.
If you’ve not got a car, and the supermarket is on the other side of town, you’ll either have to hop on the bus with your shopping bags or carry them back to your student accommodation (keeping your fingers crossed they don’t snap!).
The great thing about using local businesses is that you needn’t venture far. Perfect if you need to pick something up at short notice – be it pasta for your tea, booze for pre-drinks or a gift for your uni bestie.
- You receive a more personal service – perhaps one of the best things about using independent businesses is that they’re run by people, not boards or shareholders. This means, the more you go in to your local shop, the more you’ll get to know them, and them you.
Customer service is most important for smaller chains that are family-run, and they’ll want to do everything they can to keep you as a customer. If you’re looking for a certain product but can’t find it, let them know. They might have it in the stockroom or be able to order it into store for you.
- You can benefit from extra discounts – want to be the first to know about special offers and promotional events? This is just one thing you can expect when you shop locally. And here at CARO Lettings, we’re always looking for ways to help our students to save money whilst staying at our student accommodation in Liverpool.
Aside from letting you know about when and where you can grab a bargain, we’ve also frozen our prices – meaning we’re currently cheaper than our competitors and can help you to make the most of your student loan. By not spending as much on your monthly rent – and shopping savvier – you’ll have more to spend on food, drink, clothes, books, etc.
