It goes without saying that we think Liverpool is boss. You’d be mad to want to live anywhere else. Sometimes though, it can take outsiders a bit of persuading before they see past their misconceptions of what is honestly, the best city in the world (we’re looking at you, Southerners!) Liverpool is also hands down one of, if not the best student cities in the world. Every September, 50,000 students descend on Liverpool, transforming the city and giving it a great atmosphere. If you’re unsure if Liverpool is the city you should study in though, we’ve put together a list of reasons why you’ll love living in Liverpool.
The nightlife is infamous.
The Liverpool nightlife is infamous for being one of the best in the UK, especially if you’re a student. Back in 2015, Rough Guides even declared going on a night out in Liverpool as #3 on their worldwide bucket list. One thing students always tell us is how cheap the drinks are in town – we’re talking £1 shots, £4 doubles and £3 pints! There is something for everyone in Concert Square and the surrounding streets. Whether you’re after the big clubs like Level and Soho or speakeasy style bars like Salt Dog Slims and Dirty Little Secret, you are guaranteed to have an amazing night out. Just don’t blame us when you drunk text your ex – it was the vodka that made you do it!
It’s a food lovers paradise.
The foodie scene in Liverpool has exploded in recent years. Bold Street is now home to some of Liverpool’s best independent restaurants. Head to Mowgli, for an Indian style street food and exotic cocktails and the legendary ‘Chip Butty’, or American Pizza Slice, who claim to sell ‘the best damn pizza in Liverpool’. The brunch scene is growing in Liverpool too and you’ll find none better than that served at Moose Coffee, a favourite of Tom Hardy when he’s up filming Peaky Blinders. The latest addition to Liverpool is the Baltic Market in the old Cains Brewery. Food stalls from some of Liverpool’s best restaurants serve up tasty treats like buttermilk chicken topped with mac and cheese, and croissant gelato sandwiches for dessert. Add to this live music from DJs and Liverpool’s finest bands and you’ve got your Friday night sorted!
The coffee culture is on point.
For those of you that take their coffee seriously and wouldn’t be caught dead in Starbucks, don’t worry. Liverpool has some amazing independent cafes serving up delicious coffees and mouth-watering sweet treats in unique spaces. Some of our favourites include Love Thy Neighbour and Leaf on Bold Street, and Cow & Co on Cleveland Square.
The people of Liverpool are some of the best in the world
Liverpool has just been voted the kindest city in the UK and it’s no surprise. You honestly won’t meet a nicer bunch of people! In Liverpool, everyone is a comedian, the taxi drivers are philosophers and the girls you meet in the club toilets will be your new BFFs. The people of Liverpool even have their own language! You may struggle to understand at first, but we guarantee you’ll leave with plenty of Scouse phrases in your vocab. Be sure to check out our ultimate Scouse dictionary here!
Liverpool is a European cultural capital.
Back in 2008, Liverpool won the European Capital of Culture and ever since, the city has prided itself on its celebration of all things cultural. Firstly, Liverpool is home to world class museums. At the iconic Albert Dock, you can find Tate Liverpool and the International Slavery Museum, whilst at the World Museum you can see the famous Chinese Terracotta Warriors. If you head on over to FACT you’ll be able to watch independent films as well as the big features, before checking out amazing art and media exhibitions.
A shopaholic’s dream!
If you love to shop, you’ll love living in Liverpool. Liverpool One is a world class shopping destination where all your big brand flag shops can be found. Looking for something a little more unique? Head over to Bold Street where you’re spoilt for choice in the vintage shops.
The city is absolutely stunning.
Seriously. Everywhere you go in Liverpool you will find something beautiful to look at – it’s an Instagrammer’s dream. Head to the old business district around Old Hall Street for striking Victorian architecture or take a stroll around the Georgian Quarter and admire the splendid town houses. Just try not to get caught posing for photos on someone’s doorstop! Liverpool’s iconic waterfront is perfect for taking a sunny afternoon walk, especially around the Albert Dock which is the largest collection of Grade II listed buildings in the country. Alternatively, if cathedrals are your thing, you’re in luck because Liverpool has two! The Anglican Cathedral stands tall above the city whilst a quick walk along Hope Street takes you to the beautiful Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral.
And speaking of stunning…there are beautiful parks and beaches on your doorstop.
If you think the city of Liverpool is beautiful, just wait till you explore its parks and beaches which are only a few miles from the city centre. When you need time to de-stress, get lost exploring Sefton Park’s gardens and lakes and be prepared to get some serious doggy envy. Make sure you also take the time to explore Lark Lane. One of Liverpool’s hidden gems, for unique shops, cosy pubs and amazing restaurants. Or, take a quick train up to Crosby and Formby beaches and breath in that beautiful sea air. Now all we need is a spot of sunshine, a flake 99 and maybe a football for an afternoon kickabout.
The famous Reds and Blues.
One city, two teams, one incredible rivalry. Liverpool is of course home to two premier footie teams – Liverpool and Everton – and whenever there’s a match on, the atmosphere in the city becomes electric. There’s nothing better than an afternoon in your local pub with your mates watching your team playing, and hopefully winning!
There’s always something going on.
Perhaps one of the biggest reasons you’ll love living in Liverpool is that there is always something going on. Ever since being awarded the European Capital of Culture back in 2008, Liverpool has been home to some pretty spectacular events. You can catch the biggest live music acts at the Echo Arena, celebrate cultural festivals like Chinese New Year on Berry Street, or eat and drink your heart out at a Pizza and Prosecco Festival in the Baltic Triangle.
Hopefully now you’ll have come around to our way of thinking and understand why you’ll love living in Liverpool and that it’s hands down the best city in the UK.
