How to spend Christmas at your student accommodation

Christmas Tree How to spend Christmas at your student accommodation

The end of the first semester is drawing close and Mariah Carey is fully defrosted, which can only mean one thing – Christmas is here.

Whilst many students will be making their way home for the holidays, you may be planning to spend the winter break at your student accommodation in Liverpool

But, even if you’re excitement for the festive season is brewing, you could be feeling a little uneasy about being away from home for Christmas – which is totally understandable.

So, to help you recreate the same festive cheer you’re used to experiencing, our team have produced this helpful guide on how to make Christmas feel special in your Liverpool student accommodation.

How to spend the Christmas break away from home

Here are our top tips on making the most of your winter holiday at your student house or flat:

Decorate your living spaces

The easiest way to bring the thrill of Christmas to your student accommodation in Liverpool is by decorating your flat or house in all things festive!

As soon as December hits (or earlier if you and your flatmates are feeling super-festive), haul up your Christmas tree and start adding tinsel and decorations – all while listening to your favourite Christmas songs.

If you’re decorating on a budget, plenty of stores in Liverpool city centre stock affordable Christmas decorations, such as Home Bargains and B&M. Or, you could even make your own!

Just be sure not to pin anything into your walls, as it may damage them and cost you at the end of your contract.

Visit the Christmas markets

Liverpool-Christmas

We couldn’t write a blog on spending Christmas in Liverpool without including the annual Christmas markets.

Modelled to look like a traditional alpine ski village, you won’t struggle to feel the excitement of the holidays here!

Wander through various wooden huts selling authentic bratwursts, delicious hot chocolate with all the extras, and mulled wine if you fancy it. You can even pick up a cute gift for a loved one from one of the many independent sellers.

But it’s not just food, drinks, and quirky trinkets that are on offer – located next to the market stalls is a giant Ferris wheel and a selection of carnival games, each with great prizes to be won.

The markets are free to enter and run from the 16th of November to the 24th of December – giving you plenty of time to explore them with your uni pals.

You can find them at St. Georges Plateau, just outside St. Georges Hall.

Play Secret Santa with your pals

Before your uni friends depart for the holidays, a great way to get into the festive spirit is with Secret Santa.

If you didn’t know, Secret Santa involves you and your friends exchanging gifts anonymously, where each person is assigned someone from the group to buy a present for.

The best part about Secret Santa is that you can set a budget and everyone receives a gift.

You could give them something you know they’ll enjoy, such as bath bombs and a bottle of something. Or, have as much fun as you like with novelty gifts which are always fun to receive and bond over – it’s entirely up to you!

Cook your Christmas favourites

Christmas on student budget

Tis the season to indulge in chocolate, sweet treats, and savoury goodness – pretty much all of your favourite festive foods! You could also prepare homecooked meals that remind you of home or simply make you feel Christmassy!

Turkey sandwiches with stuffing and cranberry sauce are always a popular choice, or you could even test yourself with a beef Wellington – we’re not joking, remember the guy who made one all from the comfort of his student room and got the seal of approval from Gordon Ramsey?

Alternatively, a tasty nut roast is perfect for vegetarians or vegans.

But, if you consider yourself more of a baker than a cook, a gingerbread house could be fun to make and decorate and is simply scrumptious to eat.

Watch your favourite holiday films

Does this one even need saying!? Spending winter at your student accommodation in Liverpool can be made special by binge-watching your all-time favourite Christmas movies.

There’s lots to pick from, such as:

  • Elf
  • Home Alone
  • It’s a Wonderful Life
  • The Grinch
  • The Holiday
  • Love Actually

And there’s plenty more!

So, popcorn at the ready, sit back and soak up the merry feeling – even if you choose to watch Die Hard and consider it a Christmas film… (we’re not here to judge!)

Take part in volunteer work

Finally, if you feel you want to make a difference during your winter break, you could always do some much-appreciated volunteer work.

Charities such as Crisis are always grateful for volunteers who will provide companionship and essential services to people experiencing homelessness during one of the hardest times of the year.

And there’s many other charities in Liverpool that could hugely benefit from your service during Christmas time.

However you decide to spend your Christmas time while staying at your Liverpool student accommodation, you’re sure to feel right at home in this beautiful city!

Plus, many more Christmas events may pop up after the time of writing this blog, so be sure to keep an eye out!
